What comes to mind when you think of Christmas?
Driving around looking at Christmas lights?
Presents and shopping? (whether enjoyable or nail-biting)
Sipping Hot Cocoa with peppermint marshmallows?
Christmas Movie Countdowns
The Christmas music that has been playing since November 1st?
Whether you love the Christmas season and all the joy it brings, dread the chaos of another gifting season, feel pain and sadness at the loss of a loved one, or struggle through hardships this season, one thing is for certain: it’s easy to take our eyes of Jesus, even in this season where we are supposed to think about His birth the most. Let’s face it, we’ve all probably done it – we talk about how “Jesus is the reason for the season” and remind others that it’s not about the tree, the presence, or Santa. But then we rush around throughout the month making plans, attending parties, buying gifts, cooking treats, and more; for most of this Christmas season, we never think about Jesus until Sunday morning rolls around and the sermon at church is about His birth or we’re lighting candles at a Christmas Eve service singing about the joy He brings. And then, if you’re anything like me you feel guilty that once again you’ve made Christmas about yourself and promise that next year will be different – well, maybe.
So what should we do then?
Do we skip the gifts, forgo the Christmas Tree, sit solemnly reading our bibles this December? While the early American puritans would be in favor of that, I’m not so sure we need to throw the baby out with the bathwater here. While Jesus’ birth was a sacred and holy event, it is also a joyous one and should be celebrated, and there are many ways to point to Christ through our celebrations this season. One of the ways that helps me fix my focus on Christ through any season is being in his word – making a priority of my daily Bible reading. So, this year I put together a reading plan based on the names of Jesus so that every day I can focus on just one aspect of who he is – yes, He was the baby lying in a manger, but He’s also so much more than that!

Will you join me in reading about and studying Jesus this Christmas season? My goal is not for this to be complicated or profound, but hopefully, through this simple reading plan, we can all grow deeper in our understanding and worship of the God who came to earth as a child, experienced life like ours, and died in our place, so that we could be called children of God.
